Guinea Bissau: Boarding school Bubaque

Izg fulfilled a mission on the isle of Bubaque in Guinea-Bissau; it consisted of providing advice for the calculation and installation of solar panels for lighting purposes in the boarding school. It was built by the NGO “No Péga Mon” in cooperation with the Dutch Foundation “Bits for Kids” whichalso arranged for the necessary sponsors for the electrical installation.

Izg also took the occasion to examine the existing PV-installations and to suggest useful modifications for more efficient usage.

Furthermore the Izgdelegate examined a number of other local services such as water supply, energy, communications, waste handling. A test-wall was erected resulting into a reduction of the waste. Finally local personnel were trained for durable maintenance of the installations.

Togo Maagdenhuis: borings Efa and Sofiè

Beginning of April 2011, IzG accepted the request to give advice to the Stichting Maagdenhuis (www.maagdenhuis.nl) in preparation of the realization of two deep drillings (between 50 and 100m) in Togo, in the villages Efa and Sofiè. The request was triggered by the experience at an earlier boring (2010) in the village of Mava, whereby the boring stopped providing water after a few months. No data had been available related to the boring. IzG provided advice for the search of hydro-geological data, for the draft of the request for price quotation to local contractors and in the evaluation of the responses. By joint decision, a suitable boring company was selected based upon price and technical know-how; Izg assisted in the search for a suitable inspector of the construction works.

The construction works were successfully executed in March 2012, a complete work report is available.

Hospital Katako Kombe

Upon request of Dr. Kluyskens and of the NGO Menisa, one of our sponsors; IzG fulfilled a mission from October 5 till October 24 in order to:

- Study how to enlarge the storage-capacity for rainwater. Where to locate the tanks and a water-tower and defining their volume (also testing the quality of the water).

- Perform an audit of the buildings of the campus and make recommendations for improvement of the building practices, for instance modifying the truss such that gutters can be suspended.

- Prepare the 2013 mission of Energy-Assistance which has to assure a permanent supply of electricity with solar panels, avoiding the expense of troublesome generators.

Furthermore suggestions were made such as the use of lightning rods (or a cage of Faraday) for protecting equipment. The use of dry toilets.  How to increase safety on construction sites (constructing solid ladders). The mixing of pulverized termite nests material into mortar to improve the quality of building stones…

Of course, discussions with a local engineer and technicians formed an essential element.
